A Little Do-It-Yourself Distraction =)

Lately, I’ve been finding that I’m more interested in all-natural, organic, and just homemade things! I’ve been substituting as many of my favorite products as possible, with simpler (as in, ingredients I can pronounce) DIY or homemade versions.

It started with my haircare stuff! And I have A LOT of store-bought haircare products. I’ve recently “gone natural” (I big chopped! It was epic, but that’s a story for another day), and during that process I found that the gazillions of products I had in my cupboards just weren’t doing the things my hair needed.

In comes…YouTube and every natural hair guru with my hair type lol. A lot of these women talked about the struggle to find products that worked for them, so much so that many of them just started to make their own. I followed suit…BEST decision ever!

So I started with a soft and creamy Shea Butter Moisturizing/Sealant Cream. I basically took raw African Shea Butter (the hard one), organic Coconut Oil, Rose Hip Oil, and Tea Tree Oil, threw it in my mixer and ended up with this butter soft, melt-on-your-fingers-and-in-your-hair cream. It’s fabulous, trust me.

But this whole thing is a serious digression from what I planned to tell you about today: my latest DIY project…tinted lip balm =)

Quick backstory (actually quick, this time): I love EOS lip balm. It’s my jam, mostly because I like the shape.

I came across the idea to recycle old EOS lip balm containers on my Facebook Newsfeed, and kind of just went with it.  I found a couple of tutorials on YouTube (seriously, there is nothing you can’t find there), realized I had all the ingredients on hand and decided to give it a go.

For my first time around, I think the whole thing turned out pretty well. I’m definitely excited about refining the process and the ingredients though…

Anyways, here’s what I did:

Ingredients & Tools

  1. Empty, Clean EOS Lip Balm Container
  2. Knife or Flat Head Screwdriver
  3. Coconut Oil (approx. 1 tbsp)
  4. Shea Butter (approx. 2 tbsp)
  5. Vanilla Extract (1 tbsp)
  6. Red Lipstick (approx. 1/4 tube)

Procedure (Seriously, just type ‘EOS DIY Lip Balm’ into Google, a ton of videos will pop up)

  1. Pop the plastic divider out of the bottom half of the EOS container using either a knife or flat head screwdriver.
  2. Screw the divider into the top half of the EOS container. Place the top half of the container in the bottom half for stability.
  3. Melt the coconut oil, shea butter, vanilla extract, and lipstick together in a double boiler (or however you like to melt stuff).
  4. Pour the liquid concoction into the top half of the EOS container through the divider. Pour just enough to cover the divider.
  5. Pop it into the refrigerator or freezer (depends on how impatient you are), and once it’s a nice solid situation, press the EOS container back together.
  6. Unscrew as you normally would and moisturize your lips like it’s 1999! (Okay, that didn’t really make sense, but you KNOW what I mean).

UPDATE:

I liked my lip balm yesterday but I kept feeling like it was missing something, so I went searching online and thought adding beeswax might make it more like I’d expected.

I headed over to my local Michael’s and picked up some beeswax this afternoon. I did all the same things as before, adding about 2 tbsp of beeswax to the mixture before melting and got MUCH BETTER results =)

Here are the before and after shots!
